Found a water leak? The location of the leak determines what is necessary for repair. The following is a quick reference for water leaks, including ownership/responsiblity information. Additional info can be found HERE on the "Who Owns What?" page. 

INSIDE:

• Before the Meter = Property Owner
• After the Meter = Property Owner
• At the Meter = Requires Inspection by MVD to Determine Location of Leak/Responsibility

OUTSIDE:

• On the Property = Property Owner
• Near the Curb Stop = Requires Inspection by MVD to Determine Location of Leak/Responsibility
• In the Roadway = MVD
• From a Valve or Hydrant = MVD

Leaks on the outside of the home/business could be caused by an issue with irrigation, a leak in the water service line, due to substantial groundwater, or a perimeter drain issue. MVD has equipment to determine and confirm if the water service line is leaking. Unmetered water leaks, such as a leak in the water service line, are required to be fixed. Property owners are permitted to perform repairs themselves, or they may hire a contractor of their choice at their own expense.
